One accessory floral whorl is Calyx.
In a complete flower, there are four whorls. These four whorls are androecium, gynoecium, calyx and corolla. The whorls are categorised into two as essential whorls and accessory whorls. The first two as essential and later two as accessory.
- Essential whorls : Essential whorls are those whorls which are important for a flower. The androecium and gynoecium are considered essential as it is the reproductive part of the flower. A flower might have one of the two essential whorls. In that case it will be called unisexual flower.
- Accessory whorl are those whorls which are not always present in all flowers. Calyx and Corolla (sepal and petals ) perform the function of attracting the pollinators, giving them a landing area or protecting the essential whorls from any damage.
