कब मनाया जाता है:- यह भी हम भलीभाँति जानते- समझते है। कि हमारे देश के पर्व और त्योहार किसी न किसी ऋतु या पौराणिक कथा से अवश्य सम्बंधित होते है। होली के त्योहार पर्व के विषय दो बातें स्पष्ट से कही जा सकती है। पहली बात यह कि यह की यह त्योहार पर्व ऋतु से समन्धित है। शरद ऋतु की समाप्ति ओर ग्रीष्म ऋतु शुरू होने के मध्य का जो समय होता है। उसमें होली का त्योहार मनाया जाता है। इसे ऐसे भी कह सकते है। कि इसे फाल्गुन पूर्णिमा को मनाया जाता है। यह मान्यता है कि देवता को बिना भोग लगाएं कोई वस्तु उपयोग में नहीं लायी जानी चाहिए। इस समय की फसल पक कर तैयार हो जाती है। इस लिए इस दिन बने अन्न को देवता को समर्पित किया जाता है। दूसरे शब्दो मे अन्न को अग्नि में डाला जाता है। अन्न की आहुति दी जाती है। संस्कृत में अन्न को “होलक” ओर हिंदी में होला कहते है जो कि होलिका दहन से शुरू हो जाता है। इसी आधार पर इस पर्व का नाम होली पड़ा। इसी दिन लोग अन्न की आहुति देकर अन्न का प्रसाद एक दुसरे को देकर बड़ी खुशी से गले मिलते हैं।
