High above the city, on a tall column, stood the statue of the Happy Prince. The statue was
covered with thin leaves of fine gold, two bright sapphires for eyes and a big ruby on its
sword. One night, a migrating swallow took shelter between the feet of the Happy Prince,
thinking aloud about leaving for Egypt soon.
"Little swallow," said the Prince, 'Will you not stay with me for one night and be my
messenger? The poor boy has fever and is asking for oranges. His mother is sad as she has
nothing to give him." "I don't think I like boys," answered the swallow. "They were always
throwing stones at me. Also, I have to go to Egypt." But the Happy Prince looked so sad that
the little swallow was sorry. "It is very cold here," he said, "but I will stay with you for one
might and be your messenger."
So, the swallow picked up the big ruby from the Prince's sword and flew away with it in its
Deak. The swallow flew over the river and across the town. At last, he reached the poor boy's
mouse and looked in. The boy was tossing feverishly on his bed, while his tired mother had
allen asleep next to him. The swallow silently hopped in and laid the big ruby on the table
beside the woman. The swallow flew back to the Happy Prince and told him what he had
kod "but I feel quite warm now, although it is so cold."
