The first General Election which was held in 1951 was postponed twice because of the following reasons:

  1. About 3,200 MLAs and 489 Lok Sabha MPs were to be elected by 17 crore eligible voters.
  2. Only 15% of the electorate was literate.
  3. Nearly 40 lakh women's names were not captured in the first draught of the rolls.

First General Election in India:

  • India's first general elections took place on October 25, 1951, and lasted until February 21, 1952.
  • The Indian National Congress won by a landslide, and Jawaharlal Nehru became India's first democratically elected Prime Minister.
  • In the first general elections after India became independent, the first Lok Sabha was elected.
  • Since August 1947, the Indian Constituent Assembly has served as the country's temporary legislature.
  • Elections were held based on universal adult suffrage, which meant that anybody over the age of 21 could vote.
  • For 489 seats, 53 political parties competed. There were approximately 1874 candidates representing various political parties. There were 401 electoral districts, some of which had several seats.
