A source is moving away with velocity 0.2v, where v is the velocity of sound. If the source sounds a frequency of 800 Hz, what is the apparent frequency heard by the stationary listener? a) 667 Hz b) 660 Hz c) 956 Hz d) 867 Hz

Given : source velocity = -0.2v [∵ as source is moving away]

            velocity of sound = v

             source frequency = 800 Hz

To Find : Apparent Frequency

Solution : F(app) = {[V(sound) - V(listener)]/[V(sound) - V(source)]}* F(source)

                            = {[v - 0]/[v - (-0.2v)]}* 800

                            = {v/1.2v}* 800

                            = (5/6)* 800

                            = 666.67 Hz

By rounding of we get 667 Hz as the Apparent Frequency
