In the given circuit the resistances of 4 Ω and 12 Ω are connected in a parallel method. So their effective resistance will be:

1/R = 1/4 + 1/12

1/R = (12 + 4) / (12 × 4)

1/R = 16 / 48

R = 48 / 16

R = 3 Ω

This effective resistance of 3 Ω is in a series connection with the 8 Ω resistance.

∴ R = 3 + 8 = 11 Ω
