ययाती या कादंबरीचा पुराणाशी केवळ नावापुरता संबंध नसून, ही कादंबरी पौराणिक घटना एकत्र करून स्वतंत्ररित्या मांडली आहे.

पौराणिक कथा म्हणजे त्यामध्ये खूप काही भव्य आणि भयंकर लढा आढळून येतो. परंतु ययाती या कादंबरीमध्ये पुराणातील काही ठराविक कथा व घटना घेऊन जीवन हे काही क्षणापुरते तेच असते, असे सांगितले आहे. तर दुसऱ्या बाजूने जीवन हे चिरंतन, भौतिक आणि अध्यात्मिक आहे असे सांगितले आहे.
