Ordinarily, you cannot breathe while swallowing so you do not suck food or fluid into your respiratory tract because, under normal conditions, your epiglottis automatically covers the entrance to your airway while you swallow. If you did breathe simultaneously while swallowing, e.g. eating while laughing, getting hit with food in your mouth, falling asleep while eating, etc. a) you'll choke and cough and splutter until you clear your airway by coughing the food (usually stuck at the level of your vocal cords which is why you're often hoarse after such an event) back up b) aspirate the food matter into your bronchi or c) partially (dangerous) or completely block your airway (fatal) until / unless someone saves you.
