In the beginning of the story, the narrator was just a struggling writer and lived in a tiny apartment. The lady wants to meet him at one of the most expensive restaurants in Paris. He thought that the woman would not eat much and so, the narrator was flattered and hospitable. But after sometimes, narrator realised that the woman would eat much food and he have to pay all his money. He, then become disgusted and mortified.
