पिछले वर्ष जून के महीने के एक बहुत गरम दिन की दोपहर थी । मैं अपने कमरे में खाना खाने के बाद आराम से सो रहा था । मेरा कमरा सड़क के किनारे ही था । एकाएक तेज आवाज और भगदड़ का शोर सुनकर मैं चौंककर जाग पड़ा ।

शोर और भगदौड़ तेज होती जा रही थी । मैं फौरन कपड़े पहनकर, पैरों में चाल डाल कर सड़क पर आ गया । मैंने देखा कि बहुत-से लोग शोर मचाते हुए एक दिशा में दौड़े जा रहे थे । मैं भी उनके साथ उसी दिशा में दौड़ पड़ा । दूर से मुझे आग की लपटें उठती दिखाई दी । लपटें बराबर ऊंची उठती जा रही थीं । धुयें के घने बादल आसमान में उठ रहे थे ।

इमारत और उसका मालिक:

यह इमारत मेरे मोहल्ले में ही थी । मैं इसके मालिक लाला राधेश्याम को जानता था । वे नगर के सबसे धनी लोगों में गिने जाते थे । उन्होंने सीमेन्ट और लोहे की काला बाजारी से बड़ी धनराशि कमाई थी । उन्होंने कुछ वर्ष पूर्त ही अपने पुराने मकान को गिराकर यह भव्य और विशाल इमारत बनवाई थी ।

इमारत बड़ी आलीशान और भव्य दिखाई देती थी । इसमें शीशम के दरवाजे और खिड़कियाँ लगी थीं । इमारत के हरेक कमरे में बड़ा कीमती फर्नीचर और कालीन बिछे हुए थे । कई कमरों में एयर कंडीशन लगाए गए थे । यह तीन मंजिला इमारत थे ।

आग का कारण:

एक वृद्ध नौकर की लापरवाही से इमारत में आग लग गई थी । उसने जलती अंगीठी के पास मिट्टी के तेल की बोतल छोड दी थी और कुछ काम करने रसोई के बाहर चला गया । किसी चूहे या दिल्ली ने वह बोतल गिरा दी और मिट्टी का तैल फैल कर अंगीठी पर जा गिरा ।

जल्दी ही लपटें निकलने लगीं और रसोई की अल्मारी के तख्तों ने आग पकड ली । अल्मारी में घी व तेल आदि रखा था । पास में ही ईंधन का भण्डार था । ची और तेल से आग भड़क कर ईंधन के भण्डार में पहुंच गई और कुछ मिनटों में ही सारा मकान आग की लपटो से घिर गया ।

आग लगने पर:

सौभाग्य से उस समय मकान में अधिक लोग नहीं थे । मकान के मालिक और मालकिन दोपहर का भोजन समाप्त कर अपने एयरकंडीशन्ड कमरे में आराम कर रहे थे । वे आग से बेखबर थे । बगल के कमरे में आग पहुँच जाने पर व उसकी गरमी से वे जाग गए ।

तब तक उनका कमरा सुरक्षित था । घर को आग की लपटों से घिरा देख वे पीछे के दरवाजे से एकदम निकल भागे और सुरक्षित बाहर आ गये । वे बाहर आकर एकदम असहाय से अपने मकान को जलता हुआ देखने लगे ।
