Grignard reagent is an organic compound containing a magnesium atom bonded with an alkyl group (R) and a halide (X).
  • The Grignard reagent can be used in the synthesis of various organic compounds including alcohols, aldehydes and ketones.
  • On the reaction of Grignard reagent ([tex]RMgX[/tex]) with an aldehyde, we can obtain a primary or secondary alcohol.
  • With Formaldehyde([tex]HCHO[/tex]), Grignard reagent yields a primary alcohol.
  • With Acetaldehyde([tex]CH_{3}CHO[/tex]), Grignard reagent yields a secondary alcohol. All higher aldehydes also react with Grignard reagent to produce a secondary alcohol.
  • With a ketone such as acetone([tex]CH_{3}COCH_{3}[/tex]), Grignard reagent gives a tertiary alcohol.
