It means that even if they were in crisis and needed a lot of money they didn't commit any crimes and they resorted everything by fair means of momey which they earned by their hard work and ability. Even though they could have done any unfair mean to get the money they wanted they didn't do any unfair mean by letting their moral principles down and doing any mistakes.
