Water rises by a height of 9.77 cm

Given:

Diameter of the cylinder = 15 cm

Height of water = 18 cm

Edge length of cube = 12 cm

Find:

The height by which water will rise in the cylinder

Solution:

  • The radius of the cylinder = 15/2= 7.5 cm
  • The volume of the cube = 12³ = 1728 cm³
  • If water rises by 'h' cm
  • The volume of water displaced = Volume of the cube
  • πr²h = 1728 cm³
  • (22/7)×(7.5²)×h = 1728 cm³
  • 22× 56.25 × h = 1728× 7
  • 1237.5 × h        =  12096
  • ∴ h =  9.77 cm
  • Hence the water rises by 9.77 cm
