Rules for changing direct into indirect speech:

  • In case of interrogative sentences, reporting verb should be used as 'asked'
  • If reporting speech has reporting verb at the beginning, use 'if' in that place
  • Present participle (have +V3) form should be changed to past participle (had+V3) in indirect speech.

v. Rakesh replied that he had seen them the previous day in his class.​

Rules for changing direct into indirect speech:

  • Yesterday in direct speech should be changed into 'the previous day' in indirect speech.
  • Past simple form of verb (V2) should be changed into past participle (had+V3).
