शरीर, इंद्रिये आणि मन निर्दोष व निरोगी ठेवून समाधीकरिता आवश्यक असलेली योग्यता निर्माण करण्याची साधना. योगसाधनेचा हा एक भाग होय. पतंजलीच्या योगदर्शनात योगाची जी यम, नियम, आसन, प्राणयाम, प्रत्याहार, धारणा, ध्यान व समाधी ही आठ अंगे क्रमाने सांगितली आहेत, त्यांपैकी चौथे अंग प्राणायाम होय.

प्राण म्हणजे श्वासोच्छ्‌वासातला वायू. प्राणाचा वा श्वासोच्छ्‌वासांचा आयाम म्हणजे गति-विच्छेद, अशी पातंजलयोगसूत्रात (२/४९) प्राणायामाची व्याख्या सांगितली आहे. मनुस्मृतीत (६·७१) म्हटले आहे, की भट्टीत टाकलेले लोखंडादी धातू जसे भात्याने शुद्ध होतात, त्याप्रमाणे इंद्रियांचे मळ प्राणायामाने नष्ट होऊन इंद्रिये शुद्ध होतात. योगसूत्रात म्हटले आहे, की ज्ञानावरचे आवरण प्राणायामाने क्षीण होऊन मनाला एकाग्रतेची योग्यता प्राप्त होते. (२/५२, ५३). हठयोगाच्या परिभाषेप्रमाणे आसने व प्राणायाम यांनी सर्व नाडींची शुद्धी होते. नाडी म्हणजे मज्जातंतू, असा कुवलयानंद अर्थ करतात. उदा., सुषुम्ना नाडी म्हणजे पृष्ठवंशातून गेलेला मज्जातंतू.
