(II) Read the passage given below: It is popularly believed that the heart is situated on the left side of the chest. However, this is a diaphragm. It is approximately triangular in shape. The narrow end of the heart is pointed false conception. The heart is in the middle of the chest, between the two lungs and above the towards the left side of the chest and when the heart beats; the contraction of the heart is most powerful at this end making us believe that the heart is on the left side. The size of the heart is about the size of our fist i.e. 12cm in length and 9 cm in width in case of adult humans. It is protected by pericardium- a double walled membranous covering. It contains pericardial fluid for lubrication which lessens friction during heart beat and protects it from any kind of mechanical injuries. The heart consists of four chambers namely two upper auricles and two lower ventricles. The auricles have thinner walls because their main function is to receive blood from the body and pump it into the ventricles immediately adjacent to it. The ventricles have thicker muscular pumps blood walls because they have to pump blood to longer distances. The right ventricle up to the lungs for oxygenation. The left ventricle pumps it up to the farthest away points in the body, such as, up to the toes in the feet or up to the brain against gravity, and so its walls are thicker. The right auricle receives two large vessels i.e. anterior vena cava and posterior vena cava. The two large blood vessels start from the ventricles are the pulmonary artery and the aorta. Each heart beat consists of two major steps i.e. the auricles contract first followed by the contraction of the ventricles. The contraction phase (systole) is followed by a relaxation phase (diastole). The whole sequence of events in the heart beat is called cardiac cycle.
